Why RBI Sold $6.1 Billion in Forex Markets in May
The Reserve Bank of India sold a net $6.1 billion in the spot forex market in May 2026 to defend the rupee, which hit a record low of 96.96 per dollar amid surging oil prices driven by the Iran war. The RBI's net outstanding forward dollar sales reached a record $106.7 billion, while cumulative net sales since end-March stood at $15 billion.
